Child & Family Therapy
Being a parent is hard. Chores mount, the to-do list grows, dishes pile up, the yard grows knee-high, kids melt down. The overwhelm is taxing and the expectations seemingly high. Thoughts of “I should be able to handle this” and “I’m a failure” lead to symptoms of shame, guilt, sadness, frustration, anger, and loneliness.
And being a kid is hard. You may see your kid struggling to connect with their peers. Or fighting with their siblings. You may be getting phone calls from their school. Or you just don’t understand what’s going on for them, but something doesn’t feel right.
At Family Ties Counseling Center, we meet you and your family where you’re at. We’ll work with you on parenting, and your kiddo on skill building. We aim for you and your family to enjoy your time together, rather than just survive the day-to-day.
We see you. We hear you. We’re here to help you.
Our skilled family therapists serve a range of topics, including neurodiversity, trauma, anxiety, depression, adult families, parental separation, blended families, multicultural families, and are trained in a variety of modalities, including Child Parent Psychotherapy, Attachment Parenting, and Play Therapy.

Couples & Relationship Counseling
As humans, we have an innate physiological need for connection. Our lives literally depend on being attached to others. Which explains why it is so painful when we feel we can’t reach those we love the most.
You may find yourself 20 years into a marriage and questioning, “Who is this person?” Or feel like no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to feel understood by your partner. Maybe you’re in a relationship that when you try to talk, it turns into a fight, which turns into the silent treatment, which turns into feeling so lonely that you have no idea what to do next. And it hurts so bad.
We see you. We hear you. We’re here to help you.
When you’re disconnected from your person (or people), the world feels upside down. Our clinicians treat myriad concerns that couples may face in their life span: chronic conflict, infidelity, disconnection, nonmonogamy, becoming parents, addiction, lack of intimacy, separation – the list goes on. FTCC therapists use relational modalities that include Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman Method, and Narrative Therapy.
Individual Therapy
Life is overwhelming. Sometimes it feels like a rollercoaster, up and down and upside down, that eventually slows at the platform, but then doesn’t let you off. Work beckons, bills go unpaid, kids demand, the car breaks down. You daydream, “If there was just one more hour in the day.”
And that’s just happening on the outside. Internally, the rollercoaster makes your insides twist and turn. Anxiety flutters in your stomach, sadness sits on your chest, childhood trauma in the shadows, existential questions bounce around in your head, disempowerment fills your feet with sand. Some days you just can’t bring yourself to get out of bed at all.
We see you. We hear you. We’re here to help you.
Challenges that we work with at FTCC include, but are not limited to, ADHD, anger, addiction, grief, identity, oppression, sexuality, stress, shame, and trauma. We offer a range of modalities, including EMDR, CBT, DBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness, among others.

Teen Counseling
Between school, friends, parents, activities, exams, and college planning, you feel like you never get a moment to breathe. It feels like everybody is wanting something from you, or expecting something of you, or telling you something about you. Your insides shout: “Leave me alone! I just want to be me!”
You may find yourself coping in ways that you know aren’t necessarily helpful, but you don’t know what else to do. Sometimes your friends don’t understand, and it just doesn’t feel right talking to your parents. You’ve heard that some of your friends go to therapy, and wonder if it could be helpful for you.
We encourage you to reach out to us directly, or talk with a guardian about doing so.
The teens that we work with at Family Ties are often exploring their identities, learning ways to better interact with their families, practicing coping without self-harm, planning their futures, or building skills to manage life’s stressors.
Group Therapy
It feels terrible to believe no one in the world could possibly understand what you’re going through. You feel isolated, scared, sad, helpless, and hopeless.
And then that moment happens when someone says, “Totally. I know exactly what you’re talking about,” and the relief that rushes through you feels so liberating. Finally. Someone else gets it.
Group therapy is an enriching experience that creates community, with a group of people who might just get it. It takes you out of your comfort zone and into your learning zone. You connect with others in ways you didn’t know was possible. You finally feel a part of.
We see you. We hear you. We’re here to help you.
Our offerings at FTCC currently include groups for men and parents. Click here to learn more about our group offerings.

Adult Family Therapy
Family nurtures us, sustains us, and fulfills us. It also causes significant tension, heartache, and stress. We take the bad with the good because of our innate need to connect and be a part of. But what if it didn’t have to be so difficult?
A family experiences so much in its life span. It seems like just as things are starting to level out, something happens and it’s time to adapt again. A family member falls ill; divorce results in “taking sides;” members cope with substances, which results in others feeling concerned; a job loss happens, shaking the financial stability of the family.
We see you. We hear you. We’re here to help you.
Our skillful family therapists can help you and your family gain back that connection and support. We’ll work with your family to re-establish trust, heal past wounds, communicate openly, and identify how to move forward as a family through its life span.
Family Business Consulting
Families are complicated; running a business is complicated. You put both family and business together and it can get downright messy, not to mention stressful and overwhelming. Often, the family part of a family-owned business can get mired in challenging communication patterns as well as outdated and ineffective roles. Business families often need support and guidance to become aware of and create change within the complex pattern of interaction between the business and their family relationships.
Business owners who are also family members often know deep down that their family relationships are the most important ones and yet sometimes don’t have all the skills to be as successful with them as they do with other non-family business relationships. It’s not uncommon for family business owners to feel much more competent in business relationships than they feel in their family relationships. Change is possible and there is professional guidance available to reverse these dynamics.
Family Business Consulting can help you navigate through these challenges. It is a service offered by Jeremy Manalis, the owner of FTCC (Family Ties Counseling Center), through Map & Compass, a separate consulting practice that is a close relative to FTCC. Both Map & Compass and FTCC share the same systems-based approach to helping families. Both operate out of the same building in FTCC’s Multnomah Village location. Not only does Jeremy have specialized training to help family-owned businesses, he also has experience in a family-owned business.
